Welcome to the S.L.C.G.A

The Association shall be called The Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association (SLCGA) hereinafter referred to as “The Association”. The Association was affiliated formerly to the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and is now to England Golf.

Looking ahead to the English County Championship  2019…

County Captain Vicki Inglis has announced her team to travel to Aspley Guise for County Match Week (21 – 25 June 2019).   Aspley Guise is an airy meadow and parkland course of rolling country and inviting vistas.   Its spacious fairways  are generously adorned with trees and it is a course where a good standard of golf reaps a fair reward.

 The Suffolk team is as follows:  Samantha Annis (Ipswich), Alice Barlow (Bury St Edmunds), Vanessa Bell (Ipswich),  Lils James (Bungay & Waveney), Sharon Luckman (Ipswich), Amanda Norman (Felixstowe Ferry), Georgia Parker (Bury St Edmunds), Abbie Symonds (Ipswich), Lottie Whyman (Aldeburgh).

 This is, on the whole, a very experienced team.   Notable is the fact that Sharon Luckman has happily decided to play another year of inter-County golf though she had intended 2018 to be her last.   Samantha Annis features after dipping her toe in the water last year and Georgia Parker, Suffolk’s Junior Team Captain, steps up from the Junior side to make her debut with the ladies.    The other players, along with Sharon Luckman, featured in the team that reached the County Finals in 2017, so their supporters will be hoping they can produce some good results this time around.

The order of play:
Monday, 17th June, Suffolk v Norfolk;
Tuesday, 18th June, Suffolk v Essex;
Wednesday, 19th June, Suffolk v Cambs & Hunts;
Thursday, 20th June, Suffolk v Hertfordshire;
Friday, 21st June, Suffolk  v Bedfordshire.

It’s no use speculating about the order of play.   All the matches are as tough as each other and the difference will only be seen towards the end of the week when some of the results will be on the board and the possibilities, looking ahead to the available place for the week’s winner to enter the English County Championship Finals, might suggest some emphasis on a particular encounter.

Barlow Secures fourth County Matchplay Championship 2019

Bury St Edmunds Golf Club member, Alice Barlow has secured her Fourth successive Suffolk Matchplay title to become County Champion, after defeating her team mate Lottie Whyman in the final at Ipswich Golf Club.

The 36 hole stroke play element was cut down to 18 holes because of torrential rain which turned the course into a boating lake.  Alice was well placed with a level par round of 73 but Lottie Whyman secured the Strokeplay championship with a three under par 70.

Alice said she was over the moon to win for the fourth year running. And thought she was going home in the quarter final on Saturday afternoon against Abbie Symonds where she was two down with two to play and somehow found an eagle on 18 with a 35 foot putt to take it to extra holes and won with a birdie on the 21st hole ”

In the Final Alice raced into a five hole lead with Whyman not at her normal best as Alice played solid golf. Whyman secured a half at 6, both had a birdie at seven for half but a wayward drive by Whyman at 8 let Barlow have a 7 hole lead after nine holes, which has probably never been seen in a Suffolk final before. Two halves at 10 and 11 and Whyman’s approach at 12 was good enough for a birdie to take it down 13 when Barlow made her first error of judgment on the greens and Whyman was back to 5 down. Two cracking drives down 14 saw Barlow execute a great second to 12 feet and the match was as good as over with Whyman having to win the hole.  Final result Barlow wins 6 & 4.

Alice was also happy to see a few juniors enter the competition this year and some coming to support. I am hoping a few more will be up for it next year.
