County Match Week Day 5:  Suffolk v Bedfordshire

The last day of a long, hard and no doubt rather disheartening week for the Suffolk team probably couldn’t end soon enough.  The team managed a half with Cambs & Hunts, but unfortunately lost the other four matches.  Norfolk won the place in the English County Championship Finals, winning four matches out of five and will travel to Delamere Forest in September and we send our congratulations to them.   They had a really great week and thoroughly deserve their success.

Suffolk lost to Bedfordshire by 5.5 matches to 3.5 a scoreline which, despite two or three good performances and some very close results, handed Suffolk the wooden spoon over all.  Abbie Symonds had another fine day on the golf course.   With Lottie Whyman, she captured the one foursomes match point for the team before lunch and then polished off Chanel Fontaine-Geary by 6/5 in the singles.   Georgia Parker will have gone home happy.   She put her first County singles point on the board this afternoon when she beat Luca Thompson by 4/3.  We hope it is the first of many and that she has enjoyed the new experience.  The other half point for Suffolk came from Vanessa Bell who shared the spoils in her match against Georgia Staroscik.

The girls from Suffolk, who are all good golfers, will probably know why, after several years at the top of the league, they found themselves struggling this week.  Perhaps it is just that the other counties in the East Region have built up their teams with the aid of one or two outstanding players which has given them their turn to hit the high spots.  Whatever the reason, we wish our girls well as the 2019 golfing season moves on.  There’s plenty of it left to provide incentive.

Results (Suffolk names first): Abbie Symonds & Lottie Whyman bt Annabel Pitts & Georgia Staroscik 4/2;  Lils James & Amanda Norman lost to Sophie Hillier & Stephanie Scott 2 dn;  Vanessa Bell & Georgia Parker lost to Luca Thompson & Caitlin Thomas 1 dn.

Singles:  Alice Barlow lost to Sally Shayler 3/2;  Bell halved with Staroscik;  Parker bt Thompson 4/3;  Norman lost to Thomas 1dn;  Symonds bt Chanel Fontaine-Geary 6/5; Whyman lost to Pitts 2dn.

Final Result:  Suffolk 3.5, Bedfordshire 5.5

County Match Week Days 3 and 4:  Suffolk v Cambs & Hunts and Suffolk v Hertfordshire.

The match against Cambs & Hunts proved to be the highlight of the week so far for our team, who fought their way to a halved match overall.  Everyone is working hard but, in general, Suffolk are finding the going tough and a muscular niggle or two might be affecting the outcomes of the individual matches.

The team’s Thursday game was against Hertfordshire who already have two match wins on the board and were obviously hoping for a third success which would bring them level with Norfolk, will be delighted to have finished the day with a 6-3 scoreline.   It was not an easy victory.   As on the previous two days, Suffolk was ahead at lunchtime with two foursomes points on the board.

Lottie Whyman and Sharon Luckman had a fine win in the morning despite a slight dispute over the rules but Lottie wasn’t quite on her game after lunch.  Her opponent was also the recipient of a barrage of serendipity and she made the most of her good fortune.

Georgia Parker, who has made the step up to the ladies’ level from the Junior golfing scene, is doing well.   She has a pragmatic approach to the matches and, win or lose, she is not fazed by the occasion.   Today she lost on the eighteenth.

Lils James also lost on the last hole and the only success from the six singles matches came from Abbie Symonds. Over her county golfing career, Abbie’s efforts in a good cause have been outstanding and it is good to see her maintaining her battling qualities.

Suffolk’s foursomes play over the four days has been very productive but, unfortunately, their usual ability to turn the singles around has deserted them. Of course, Norfolk will be hoping to keep their momentum going with a win over Essex, taking their match tally to four and keeping their noses in front in the race for the Championship Finals place.

County Match Week Day 5:  Suffolk v Bedfordshire

Suffolk really need a win to salvage their pride and go home with a full point on the match board.   The team hasn’t had much support from their home county and it would be nice to think that some friendly faces might appear during Friday.   Anyone who reads this and has time to pop across to Aspley Guise would be very welcome.

In the meantime, good luck, girls!  Go to it…

County Match Week Day 2 (Tuesday) – Suffolk v Essex

Essex triumphed today though there were some close tussles and the standout Suffolk performance came from the partnership of Alice Barlow and Abbie Symonds playing Sophie Wheeler and Ashley Chalmers.  Alice and Abbie were three down after fourteen holes but stormed through the next four to win 1 up.

Suffolk were in a good position going into the singles, having won two of the morning foursomes.   Lottie Whyman and Sharon Luckman bt Louise Caldon and Amanda Colgate Herbert by just the one hole while Amanda Norman and Lils James narrowly lost to Megan Henry and Harriet Lynch 2/1.

In the singles, Essex got the bit between their teeth, winning five of the six singles for a 6-3 victory.   Lottie Whyman flew the flag for Suffolk, beating Chloe Arthur by 4/3.

Tomorrow Suffolk will play Cambs & Hunts and a win would give them a boost.   A look at the weather forecast for the venue is not exactly encouraging, but we will all be hoping for the best and wishing the team good fortune.

Results (Suffolk names first)

Foursomes:  Alice Barlow & Abbie Symonds bt Sophie Wheeler & Ashley Chalmers 1 up;  Lottie Whyman & Sharon Luckman bt Louise Caldon & Amanda Colgate Herbert 1 up;  Amanda Norman & Lils James lost to Megan Henry & Harriet Lynch 2/1.

County Match Week Day 1:  Suffolk v Norfolk.

Suffolk lost 3-6 to Norfolk.   The match against Norfolk has always been particularly important to the two counties as they were the nearest neighbours in the days when there were only four counties playing in the first round of the English County Championship.   However, Norfolk have been in the ascendancy in recent times, fielding a particularly strong team with some very good young golfers.  Detailed results will be posted when we get them.

Our team takes on Essex on Tuesday and will be hoping for a good result.   When Essex and Hertfordshire joined the four counties to make it six in the East Region, both teams were very accomplished and rode rather roughshod over the original four.   Suffolk has had good results against them in the last few years and will be hoping to carry on the sterling work in the next few days.

Results from Day 1, Suffolk v Norfolk (Suffolk names first):Foursomes:  Amanda Norman & Lils James lost to Amelia Williamson & Abigail O’Riordan 4/2;  Alice Barlow & Abbie Symonds bt Tiffany Mills & Imogen Leeder 3/2;  Lottie Whyman & Georgia Parker lost to Amy Taylor & Karen Young 1 dn.

Singles:  Barlow bt O’Riordan 3/2;  Norman lost to Jo Herd 3/1;  Luckman lost to Williamson 5/4;  James lost to Amy Taylor 3/1;  Symonds bt Young 4/2;  Whyman lost to Mills 3/2.

Final Result:  Suffolk 3, Norfolk 6.
