East Region Senior Women’s League

(6 singles matches played off scratch)

Suffolk Seniors v Norfolk Seniors

Thursday 19 October ’23 at Royal Norwich GC

Suffolk Senior Ladies are sponsored by Sandlings Properties.

Well!!!! Our last match of the season and what a match it was!!  Wednesday night had seen torrential rain and high winds around the country so we wondered how we might find the course.  The weather forecast for Thursday was decidedly ‘iffy’ with sporadic showers and thunder a possibility. Fortunately, all our fears were unfounded!  We arrived at the venue in a steady drizzle but by the time we went out to play, the rain had stopped and even the sun put in an appearance for a while!  Though the course was very soggy in places, the water had mostly drained, the greens were running fast and smooth and preferred lies helped.

Our matches with Norfolk are always keenly contested and in the past Suffolk have found it a challenge to hold our own against tough opposition.  At Royal Norwich, the team excelled themselves!  For the first time that I can remember, Suffolk won!  Congratulations to all the team for a fantastic performance.  It was always going to be tough for the person playing number one, in this case Rachael, to play Tracey Williamson who has not long returned from helping the England Seniors win the Home Internationals.  Rachael played well to keep in touch in the front 9 but Tracey pulled ahead on the back 9.  Helen battled hard to win a well deserved half.  Kristina and Amanda made a very successful debut in the Seniors Squad, both winning their matches.  I had a great battle with Sharon, it all coming down to the putting and who could get the ball reasonably close with the first putt – tricky!!  For me, the greens won!

Many thanks to Nicky Wylie, the Norfolk Seniors Captain, for organising everything for our match, we had a great time; the course in good condition and the food great.  It is always a very friendly rivalry when we play Norfolk, making the matches enjoyable and competitive!

Our results in the East Region Senior Women’s League have been impressive this year, we won against Cambs & Hunts, Hertfordshire and Norfolk, only narrowly losing to Essex.   So …. we finished the season on the same points as Essex so it all came down to the number of games won in those matches.  Unfortunately for Suffolk, Essex have 13.5 games won and Suffolk have 13.0!! So Essex is the winner of the league – congratulations!  Suffolk seniors are gaining experience and confidence all the time.  I think we now know for sure that we can compete successfully at this level …… so onwards and upwards next year!
