Hooray! Here we go again at the real start to the County’s competitive year and, although the fields for both the Ladies and the Senior Ladies Championship represent a select band of golfers, they are the players who would have had the best chance of winning even if the number of contestants were greater.
Unfortunately, the idea of a second tier failed to encourage enough people to swell the ranks of the main Championship, but eighteen senior players have chosen to enter for their Championship and that is a distinct increase on the eleven who entered in 2017. Lotti Edmunds is defending her victories in both the Strokeplay and Matchplay events.
In the Ladies division, Alice Barlow, playing off scratch, defends her title and must hope to win for the third year in a row. She probably has to be favourite, though her playing partner, Lottie Whyman (1 handicap) has been returning good scores recently and County Captain, Vanessa Bell, also playing off 1, will be a strong contender. Fiona Edmond, last year’s Strokeplay winner and runner up in the Matchplay, disappointingly for her and us, too, is out injured but Georgia Parker, still a Junior, joins in the fun. Molly Newson and Fiona Stokes, both up and coming players, are also taking part.
As usual, sixteen from the Ladies 36-hole Strokeplay Championship will qualify for the Matchplay Championship taking place over the following two days. The Seniors do not have to work quite so hard. Their eighteen-hole qualifying will be followed by a semi-final and final to find the Matchplay Champion for 2018.
