What a year it has been. After three long and arduous lockdowns competitive golf is underway again and what better way to showcase the County competition restart than with the Stroke Play and Match Play Championships which will be held at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club over the coming weekend (Friday 14th May – Sunday 16th May.
The weather forecast isn’t looking too bad with periods of cloud and sun with a shower on Friday afternoon predicted. Saturday and Sunday look to be mostly cloudy with spotty showers.
The Stroke Play Championship as usual will be Medal format over 36 holes, with the top 16 qualifying to compete for the Championship in a scratch match play knockout. The next 8 from the Stroke Play will qualify to compete for the Plate in a handicap match play knockout.
There are currently 22 entrants for the Championship and we have never had so many players playing from around the scratch handicap mark, in living memory that is, which is good and should stand us in good stead for the golfing season ahead. There are also several newcomers to the entry list, any of whom might spring a surprise!
Play starts at 8am on Friday with Amanda Norman and Vanessa Bell first off the tee. All the hallmarks are there for a fabulous 3 days of golf.
After such a long layoff, all the competitors will be testing out both their skill and nerve and Amanda Norman will be watching everyone’s performance with care as she sets about choosing her team for 2021. The East Region County Match Week, the first round of the upcoming English County Championship featuring Suffolk. Bedfordshire, Cambs and Hunts, Essex, Hertfordshire and Norfolk will be played at Stoke-By-Nayland (17-20th June 2021).
