English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, Ipswich GC this week
Ipswich Golf Club opens its doors on Tuesday to one of England’s most prestigious Championships (20th – 22nd August). The big field of 144 will play for the very large trophy, the player with the lowest gross score over 72 holes taking the Championship. Everyone will play 18 holes over the first two days. Then the top 40 and ties will go on to play 36 holes on Thursday,
Six of Suffolk’s top players have entered alongside the 138 from all around the country and abroad.
Over the next three exciting days, those who have followed county golf over the years will recognise plenty of names and faces on the golf course. Austria’s Isabella Hopfer, who won last year by a massive margin of 11 shots, defends her title. Her starting time is 1300 off the 1st tee.
If you can visit the Club in support, it would really mean something to our home grown golfers. We wish all of them good luck.
Starting times and tees:
8.50 1 Sharon Luckman (Ipswich)
8.50 1 Lils James (Bungay)
9.20 1 Abbie Symonds (Ipswich)
9.30 11 Alice Barlow (Bury St Edmunds)
12.40 1 Vanessa Bell (Ipswich)
14.20 11 Georgia Parker (Bury St Edmunds)
All other competitors and their starting times can be found on the England Golf website.
East Region Girls Championship 19th August 2019.
Twenty-eight girls have entered the East Region Girls Championship to be played at Newton Green Golf Club and seven of them are home grown. Georgia Parker (7 handicap) and Rio Everitt, who plays off 8 are drawn together with Millie May Penfold, an Essex nine-handicapper who makes up the three-ball. Mary Cuthbert (13) joins Renoa Azmir (12) and Amy Knotts (12) who are both from Essex. Chloe Dixon (14) and Juliette Coffey (16) will play with Zoe McLean-Tattan (14). Laura Eaden (18) makes up a two-ball with Sai Vaishanavi Murukuntla (19) and Natasha Gregory (19) with Hannah Kane (20) from Essex.
Happily this is a much bigger field than it was last year, perhaps a sign that golf in the East is a growing sport for girls. We are looking forward to it being held on our patch and hope that some of the seven might get in amongst the prizes.
