Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club recently hosted a Level 2 R & A Rules School, organised by Suffolk Golf Union and facilitated by Suffolk referees Mike Rees, Nicki McMahon, Trevor Mason and supported by Jeff Deslandes.

Held over two days the purpose of the school was to assist golfers who already hold the Level 1 rules qualification to increase their knowledge and advance to the Level 2 qualification with the potential to become a “county referee” should the required standard (pass-mark) be reached.

11 men and 10 ladies attended the school, 15 of whom belong to Suffolk clubs (Felixstowe Ferry, Gorleston, Hintlesham, Newton Green, Rookery Park, Royal Worlington, Rushmere, Stowmarket, Thorpeness, Ufford Park and Woodbridge).

After an anxious wait, the outcome of the challenging two days involving practical sessions, role play, classroom presentations and a formal exam is now known and Suffolk now have 5 new County referees, 4 of whom are women.  They are:

Jennifer Aston, Thorpeness; Mary Stevenson, Thorpeness; Di Buxton, Felixstowe Ferry. Alison Symons, Felixstowe Ferry; Matt Sherlock, Rookery Park.

Well done and congratulations to all who participated and particularly to the 4 ladies flying the flag for women’s golf in the county.  How fortunate and proud are we and we look forward to seeing them officiating at county events at some point in the future!
